FSi provided energy modeling and LEED consulting for a new 138,000 sf transfer station with 3,800 sf of attached offices. From early in design, FSi provided input on potential designs and their impact on energy performance, as well as energy modeling and LCCA analysis. Innovative systems include natural ventilation on the tipping floor and heat harvesting from the trash compactor. FSi’s energy model helped the client to select a trash compactor 35% more energy efficient than standard compactors. Our modeling also showed an expensive heat recovery system for the domestic hot water had a LCCA payback of over 40 years, and this system was not included in the final design. Our work was instrumental in earning LEED points including most of the possible points for LEED NC 2.2 credit EA1, both EQ 1 and EQ 2, all 10 points for EAc1 and EAc4.
