Can a transfer station be a thing of beauty and a showcase for sustainability – within a limited budget? In the City of Seattle, the answer is yes. The new, 138,000 sf South Transfer Station is LEED Gold certified, and FSi is proud to have played a key role in its LEED certification. From early in planning, we provided input on potential designs and their impact on energy performance, as well as energy modeling and LCCA analysis. Innovative systems include natural ventilation on the tipping floor and heat harvesting from the trash compactor. Our energy model helped the client select a trash compactor that provided a 35% increase in efficiency. We also found an expensive heat recovery system had an LCCA payback of over 40 years, and it was removed from the final design. Our work was instrumental in earning LEED points including most of the possible points for LEED NC 2.2 credit EA1, both EQ 1 and EQ 2, all 10 points for EAc1 and EAc4.
