Water Heater Replacement in 16 Apartment Buildings

Seattle Housing Authority

FSi was the prime consultant and mechanical engineer for replacement of existing electric boilers with high-efficiency gas-fired water heaters at 16 senior and low-income apartment buildings. The buildings range from six to 16 stories, and 53 to 126 units. To increase efficiency, boilers serving the domestic hot water system at each building were also replaced with high-efficiency units. Special consideration was given when routing the flue vent and combustion air to and from the boiler rooms, and routing the natural gas piping to the boiler rooms, since there was no existing gas at any of the sites. The buildings were fully occupied during construction, and FSi provided construction phasing plans to minimize impacts on building occupants.
