Cascadia Elementary School
Ferndale School District
FSi was the mechanical engineer for the new 64,000 sf Cascadia Elementary School serving 600 students in Ferndale, Washington. The mechanical systems incorporate highly efficient condensing boilers with 97% thermal efficiency. A DDC system with air handlers, thermostats, and controls in each classroom ensure comfort.
FSi provided study, recommendations and documentation for compliance of the mechanical systems for the new Washington Sustainable Schools Protocol (WSSP). This is one of the first schools in the state governed by the WSSP, and FSi was instrumental in supporting this effort on this project. The design team used Revit building information modeling (BIM) software to ensure coordination and fit of equipment in tight spaces beneath the building’s complex rooflines. The BIM model also helped the design team analyze building orientation, and limit openings on faces of the building impacted by freezing wind from the mountains.
The project received a Jury Citation at the National School Boards Association Exhibition of School Architecture
