Other Data Center Projects

Details about a few other projects.

  • 10-80 Hub Shell and Utility Separation. Boeing Commercial Air Group – Renton, WAFSi was a subconsultant on this project to separate the essential functions of the 10-80 building from the remainder of the building to be demolished. FSi was responsible for the mechanical and fire protection engineering on this 20,000 sq. ft. facility to be separated from the larger, 300,000 sq. ft. building. The essential functions in the Hub included the Telephone Switch Room and Network Communications Center, both of which served the Renton plant and several other facilities, along with an Operations Center, which was to be the command center after earthquakes or other emergency situations. The cooling system included fan coil units, a rooftop air handler, and underfloor coolers served by the plant chilled water system, and a redundant DX cooler in the Telephone Switch Room. The design included cutting over from the plant chilled water system to a standalone system with redundant air- cooled 110- ton chillers. One challenging aspect of this project was that the essential functions could not be without cooling or power during any part of construction, so the chilled water piping installation had to be carefully staged.

  • Enlarge Boeing Commercial Data Room Bldg. 4-63 FSi, as the prime consultant, provided design and construction administration for the relocation and enlargement of an existing computer room. The design allowed for the construction to take place with little interruption to the operation of the computer room.
  • Boeing Commercial DC 9-101 Data Center Wall Provided design for a new separation wall, fire protection for tape storage units and raised under floor power for a data room.
  • Boeing Defense & Space Group Advanced Research Projects (ARP) Lab This technical laboratory was a challenging project. The ARP Lab is a multi-user facility constructed for the assembly and testing of electronic devices in several different stages of development. It is a Class 300,000 general assembly clean room allowed for the testing of laser devices with an adjoining clean bench area for final assembly. Associated with this area, all within secure perimeters, were Radio Frequency Anechoic Chambers with signal generation and computer analysis rooms. All of the above areas were served by air handling systems with security requirements demanding sound attenuation to STC 50 and Radio Frequency attenuation. FSi successfully met the challenges of the project.
  • Evaluate Emergency Generator and Uninterruptible Power Supply for Boeing Commercial Airplane Group, Western Division FSi evaluated the capacity of the existing uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and engine generator, which supply the computer rooms in a pair of office buildings. The computer facilities were scheduled for expansion, and the customer wanted to determine if the existing computer power supply system would continue to meet the needs of the computing equipment. FSi leased several state-of-the-art power monitors, installed them at appropriate points in the power supply system, and collected the data from those monitors. Using those data, FSi wrote a report to tell the customer about the limitations of the existing UPS and generator, and described two proposed schemes to alleviate the coming shortage in capacity.
  • Olympic Memorial Hospital Data Room Addition Provided mechanical engineering design services for the remodel of a storage area to accommodate the expansion of the computer room.
