Other Hangar and Tower Projects

Details about a few other projects.

  • Air Traffic Control Tower Upgrades at Various Airports FSi was the prime consultant and fire protection engineer on this series of Life Safety and Fire Protection Upgrades to air traffic control towers at several airports. Most of the towers were originally constructed with one stairwell and an elevator. The intent of these projects was to upgrade the safety features of the towers to meet current OSHA and Fire/Life Safety standards. FSi and their subconsultants visited each airport tower, interviewed personnel, tested air pressurization, developed the scope, prepared construction documents and supported the construction process. Airport locations have included: • Salem, Oregon • Casper, Wyoming • Pocatello, Idaho • Twin Falls, Idaho • Ogden, Utah • Gig Harbor, Washington • Lewiston, Idaho • Walla Walla, Washington • Yakima, Washington The Scopes of Work have included: • Modification of stair pressurization fan system • Addition of addressable fire alarm systems • Ensuring one or two hour rated stairwells • Ensuring one or two hour rated vertical shafts • Creation of elevator machinery rooms • Smoke seal/stops for floor penetrations and through rated enclosures • Fire wrap support beams in stairwells • Relocation/removal of equipment out of stairwells
  • Boeing Commercial Aircraft Bridge Utility Relocation FSi was the mechanical subconsultant on this relocation of existing utilities on the south Cedar River Bridge. The south bridge is a vital crossing for 737s and 757s from Boeing’s Renton plant to the Renton Airport for the aircraft’s first flight. Due to the bridge’s importance and the seasonal flooding of the Cedar River, the bridge needed to be modified to allow elevation during flooding conditions. FSi’s scope of the project involved the relocation of several utilities: fire water main, compressed air supply, sanitary sewer forced main, and communication cables and fiber optics. Through coordination with the City of Renton, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Boeing Fire Protection and others, the design decision was made to direct-bury all of the utilities at the bottom of the river. A rigid pipe support frame was designed to span the entire width of the river to provide adequate thrust blocking of the fire water main and support of the other utilities.
  • Fire Protection Upgrades to SeaTac Air Traffic Control Tower FSi provided the fire protection system upgrade design for the Air Traffic Control Tower at SeaTac Airport. The upgrades were necessary to address OSHA’s concerns for personnel safety in this limited-egress structure. This work involves modifications to the detection and alarm system, along with the addition of emergency lighting packs and fire extinguishers.
  • Boeing Commercial Flight Test Hangar Fire Protection Study FSi performed an evaluation of the existing water deluge system and its replacement in this 167,000 square foot hangar. The study effort included the review of the current system capacity, review of current codes for fueled aircraft inside hangars, cost and loss estimating and developing options for upgrade. Two alternatives were recommended with the strongest endorsement given to a new AFFF (foam/water) deluge system.
